Big White Community School

Big White Community School was established in 2005 by the community at Big White Mountain in conjunction with Big White Ski Resort and  School District 51.

The school falls within School District 51 of the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary and offers a Kindergarten (age 5) to Grade 9 (age 15) program. It is located within the Happy Valley area of Big White Mountain and is accessed via Happy Valley Road. The school can vary from 2-3 teachers plus support staff depending on enrollments year to year.

The average number of students per year is typically 30-55, with active involvement from the community and parents.

Big White Community SchoolThe school offers a unique program that sees a four-day school week, allowing the children to take full advantage of the mountain facilities during the winter months. The physical education program offers weekly ski and snowboard lessons to students as well as numerous other outdoor activities.

For BC residents it is a regular public school; out of province or overseas students are made very welcome and fees do apply (see SD51 website for more information).

Early Years Group

This is a free drop-in program for children and their parents/caregivers funded by Boundary Family Services. Parent participation is required while the children interact with each other through imaginative play, stories, snacks and arts and crafts projects.

The Early Years Group is held Monday’s from 9 to 11 A.M. in the lower level of the Big White Community School. (If Monday is a public holiday the group is held on the Friday of that week.)

 

Early Learning Centre

The Big White Mountain Early Learning Centre offers learing opportunities for kids from 18 months to under 6 years, operating out of facilities at the Big White Community School. The facility offers educational methods in early childhood learning, including Montessori.
